POR-15 or other rust preventative Empty POR-15 or other rust preventative

Post by 39coupe Fri Sep 05, 2008 1:21 pm

I've seen a lot of guys on The Samba talk about using POR-15 on their pans. Any one have any experience with this or know a place to get it at a good price?

Thanks,
Eric

I have not used por15 but I have used rust bullet in black and grey. Very easy to use seems to do a decent job and I can get it right down the road at summit racing.

I will post pics in a few.

When I refurbed my fuel tank I used Por15 on the bottom and the Rustoleum Equivelent on the top. They look exactly the same, grip just the same and the enamel appears to be just as hard. I can't say on long-term though which will be better.

The reason I did this...
I purchased a pint of POR15 for $25 which quickly ran out. I purchased a quart of brush on Rustoleum for $11. I wanted to test the claims to see if POR15 is overrated. So far, to me anyways, it appears to be.

I just used some spray on bedliner from Walmart on my pans on the inside and it seemed to do a great job. One can was $8 and it did the whole inside floor. I am going to pick up another can and do the underside. I tested it by throwing my keys on the floor and a pair of pliers pretty hard and it didn't even leave a mark. It also helps with noise.

I've used POR-15, Rust Bullet, and Rustoleum. The best place I found to buy POR-15 is the website www.por-15.com. As far as uses go, I painted 3 coats of POR-15 on the pan of my buggy. I bought a six pack of the pints and it did the whole pan and a bunch of knick knacks. It is thinner than Rustoleum and Rust Bullet and if you prep the surface correctly you can hit it with a hammer and it won't chip. As far as rust prevention goes, the jury is still out as my buggy hasn't been on the road yet. I painted the entire interior of my bus with Rust Bullet for two reasons. 1 I didn't want to have to top coat it. POR requires a top coat because its UV sensitive. 2. It's available at Summit which save me on shipping. So far, I've had good results with the rust bullet. I haven't noticed any chpping and the rust that I painted over hasn't returned. The front bumper was painted with Rust Bullet as a primer and black Rustoleum and a roller as a top coat. So far it's looking good.

Black rust bullet rolled on. Left out in the weather for months held up pretty good. This was taken while it was still wet though.

I've only used rust bullet myself because of the no prep thing but i saw a few pans Joey did with por-15 at his shop in gainsville. Looks nice and will probably outlast you.
