Re: Pat the 64

Got the front wheel bearings replaced, spindles installed with new shoes, new springs, and new cylinders, intstalled a new steering box and reused the tie rods as they were newer.  Installed the springplates with new bushings coated in baby powder.  Also pulled the reduction box axle tubes off the tranny so I can get them and the tranny cleaned and painted. And now since I am this far along with almost having the reduction boxes apart I am thinking about ditching the bugzyla adaptors in favor of making my own Johnson's no hop kit.....I cant make my mind up though.

I did start doing some minor stuff to the body.  I pulled all the old aluminum trim and installed new stainless trim.  Also pulled the door handles so I can pull the lock cylinders to go into new handles as these are pitted really bad.  I pulled the headlights to see if they would clean up but one bucket is trashed and they turned out to be bus buckets.

I also dug around behind the garage and found a straight non pitted bumper and went to work with steel wool and chrome polish.  I think it turned out pretty good.  The current front bumper on Pat is in bad shape. The towel bar is broken and the blades chrome has flaked.

It took four and a half bumpers to make a nice bumper but I think it turned out nice.  I would still like to have an original towel bar so I can get rid of the bad fitting older aftermarket one but this one will do for now.

I have a trade pending right now not involving Pat but the 63 pan I was working on for Pat so we may have style/plan shift.....stay tuned!

I did pull the stock front beam out of Pat yesterday to include with 63 pan so I can make it a roller.

Done deal!  I traded off my bobber, the 63 pan, and a nice 67 beetle shell for a new toy.  I will be using the sprints with the 7.00-15s on it so the plan has changed for Pat.  I still have the set of fuchs with good tires that came off of Old Blue so I am going to use them.  I also have a set of rotors that are drilled to 5x130 which is good because I want to run disc brakes.

Today I finished building the dropped disc brake spindles and finished narrowing the previously raised beam.  I still have to narrow the leaves and tie rods and paint.  I went with a 4" narrowed beam. I ended up narrowing it a little different than usual since I re-used the adjusters I previously welded in to make it a raised beam.  I ended up cutting the brackets off the adjusters and getting the center collars turned down so they would fit inside the beam tubing.  I offset my cut on beam by taking almost 3" out of one side and a little over and inch on the other. By doing this I only have one weld seam per tube.

Pulled Pat's pan out with help from James and Ashley on Sunday.  Yesterday I stripped it down, removed all the tar board, removed the old pans and installed some zito pans that I already had.  Lots of work for one day but a big step towards getting Pat on the road.

Took the pan to the blaster today and picked up Gordon's pan.  I found these guys while fishing out the e-brake catch I dropped in the tunnel before loading it up.

What about now? For some reason I get mixed results posting from google photos. I can always see the pictures when I post so maybe they have some kind of privacy setting on them. The pictures are not really that great and don't really show much progress. Hopefully the next ones will be primer and paint.

Re: Pat the 64

Post by Attorney Isaiah Loophole on Mon Mar 07, 2016 9:57 pm

The last couple of days I have been working on cleaning up most of the bolt on parts so I can start assembly on the pan.  I spent of bunch of time degreasing then sandblasting and finally painting most of the parts.  I ended up going deeper into the trasaxle than I had planned but I think it was worth it.  I ended up taking the axle tubes and axles off and soaking and scrubbing the transaxle in my parts cleaner with diesel.   Wire wheeling gave it semi shine no paint was used on the transaxle case. I also got the tranny mount and master cylinder painted. I am replacing the nose cone with one with a reverse light switch. I installed new seals and gaskets on the bearing covers when I installed the axle tubes. I still have to clean up and paint the pedals and the rear drums....

Thanks Tim!

I got more done today! I hope to make it a roller tomorrow but we will see.....

Today I got the nose cone mounted up, the boots on, tranny mounts on, e-brake hardware blasted and painted, new torsion bushings installed with the 4"drop plates and the tranny mounted up except the axle to spring plate bolts as I am still cleaning them. I also got the master cylinder mounted in prep for running the brake lines.

Re: Pat the 64

I finished narrowing and dimpling the leaves for the beam then painted the beam.  I blasted and painted the rotors as they were a little rusty.  They are new but I have had them for years.   I got the 6 bolts cleaned up for mounting the axles to spring plates but before bolting them up I drilled the spring plates to run the e-brake cables thru.   The old clutch cable was in really good shape so I cleaned it and ran a tap down the threads and re-installed it with a new bowden tube and new wing nut. While the beam was drying I cleaned up the shift rod, installed a new bushing with clip and installed the shift rod. Finally I installed the beam and the front inspection cover with a new seal.  I also got the new bearings races knocked in the rotors.  Tomorrow I plan to get the spindles and rotors mounted, install the rear brakes and make this thing a roller!

Drop disc spindles and rotors on!

Rear brakes installed!

My Dad came over and gave me a hand and now I a roller!  Still have to install the steering box, cut the tie rods down and install, order some shocks and install, and plumb the brakes.  At least it is off the saw horses!
