Towing the Bug
I picked up a tow bar from Ken and Inge (Athens VW) and gave it a test run. All was well until turned around and heard the tires sliding. I found and kinda forgot that my bug has key out steering lock. Easy enough, just turn the key to the on position. Nope, it keeps all the accessories and the coil on. I was trying to figure what to do (disconnect + at the battery, pull the + on the coil) when I inadvertently found something. You can put the key in, turn it to on and back off and the wheel remains unlocked. It's only when you remove the key does lock engage. I plan to run with it this way.
#1 is this correct?
#2 How do you tow your dub?
#3 The tow bar is very, very close to the grease nipples. Any thing I should know here? Any danger of hitting them?
And for those that answer "I don't tow my DUB, I drive it", I am towing the reliable VW behind the recall prone Dodge to the dealership at which time my happy ass will drive away in the good car.

Re: Towing the Bug
I can't answer the first two as I have only towed my rail but the grease fitting should come out when towing.
Re: Towing the Bug
Are you saying I should remove them or are you saying that they will come out if I tow with them in?Joe wrote:I can't answer the first two as I have only towed my rail but the grease fitting should come out when towing.

Re: Towing the Bug
The towing went fine. Turned it on and back off and it remains unlocked. I opted to leave the nipples in and they were never touched. The rub marks were about 1/8" away. Thanks for the input and Jon for the call.
BTW if anyone is interested, there is a variety store in Winder that has the magnetic light kits for $18, a Reese universal tow bar for $49, Reese drop hitch for $8 and Reese hitch lock for $7.
