E Brake linked to front disc problem
OK, so I thought I picked up a pebble in the front passenger pads or there was a hard substance got molded in the pad itself because I have a noise coming from the front passenger side wheel and it can best be described, shhh, shhh, shhh, shhh and so on. I removed the wheel and turned the disc and there is a very specific point at which it makes this scraping noise. I marked it on the disc and colored it with a felt tip marker to see if there was a distinct area that would rub and there was not. I have not removed the pads because I am trying to find out if I have to have the VW pad extractor or if there is an easier way. I had decided to give it a few more miles or so to see if what ever was in the pad would eventually wear out. It did not.
About a month ago I pulled into a parking spot, yanked the parking brake, something popped and I had no resistance on the lever and subsequently no e brake. I let it back in, pulled it out and nothing changed. The third time I pulled it, I had resistance as well as e brake.
I swear this all comes together and has a point. Yesterday, I pulled out on my way to the market with the same noise as usual and I noticed that I had not let the e brake all the way in. I release the e brake and the noise stopped. Had I been leaving the e brake on this whole time? No, I then began to test and here is what I found. When the noise happens, all I have to do is give a few pulls on the e handle and it goes away. I have found now, that I have to keep pulling and letting off sometimes to achieve e braking. Sometime the noise will start all of the sudden just riding down the road but all I have to do it give the e brake a pull and push or two and it will quiet again.
Questions: 1. Is there an easy way to pull the pads without this tool shown in the book? 2. How can the e brake be linked to the front when it says in the Bentley manual "The cable-operated parking brake works on the rear wheels only"? 3. Has anyone seen this before?

Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
I forgot to mention, the pulling of the e brake does not cure the noise by reducing the speed. Actually, braking does not solve it either. The only link is the e brake lever. Truth be known, it is quieter when you are rounding a LH curve than a right, as if this needed to be any more convoluted.
BTW, I just crawled under there again and I just can't see how this is possible.

Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
Are you absolutely positive the noise you're hearing is from the front brake? It could be that noise is comming from the rear as well as the swooshing you're hearing from the front disc. Those cables can't have anything to do with the front brakes. I would try to let some tension out of the cable on the side you think the noise is comming from.

Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
It is definitely coming from the front, you can feel it in the floor pan.......................and I hung my head out the door. I learned from another site that I might have two problems going on at one time. There is probably something on the pad or a defective pad and an e brake ratchet issue with sticking cables. The ratchet and sticking cables could account for the intermittent e brake and when I pull the e brake and it silences the noise, it from a slight pressure difference when the pads are pulled on. We'll see, I'm taking it apart tonight.bumblebuggy wrote:Are you absolutely positive the noise you're hearing is from the front brake? Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
Drew had a very similar problem with his bug before the accident and he swore it was coming from the front end. I drove it and heard the noise. we swapped places and as he was driving I listened and found it was actually coming fromthe left rear. After removing the wheel I found the "new" brake hardware kit that I had put in, (hold down pins, springs and retainers) had broken or pulled through and let the spring and retainer fall down into the drum and would scrape when driving. I replaced them with old og ones and have had no more problems with it. With that long story said If it has any ties to the e-brake handle it has to be in the rear. with the acoustacles of a VW it may sound like its in the front. Its worth the try to pull the rear drums and see.

Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
i had the same problem a while ago. Turns out my rear drums or brakes were worn down in a way so the drum wore unevenly. So when i was driving the pad would periodically hit causing a shh shh shh noise. But when i raised the e-brake lever, it caused the brakes to drag, thus no noise. I basically replaced everything, and it went away.
Sometimes you can swear its comming from the front, but its actually in the rear. I say pull the rears just to be absolutely sure. Or if anything, jack it up, and spin te tire fast and se eif you hear the noise.

I think Winifred is tired of listening to Scott (shh shh shh...) hehe
I use a plain old "C" clamp on all brake calipers.
Perhaps the caliper is hanging up? Just a guess?

Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
I will be digging in to it tomorrow. Now, the sound has changed. I am currently riding with one click on the e brake and the e brake does not work. With the e brake disengaged it sounds like you are holding a steel re bar against the drum as it spins. One click of the e brake and it quits. And now I have no e brake. I slid under the bus as my wife pulled on the brake and what I see is: the single cable from the lever pulls as it should but only the driver side moves forward as it pulls the union. See below. The LH side is with the brake disengaged and the right is engaged
Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
Sounds like something gave up in the rear. You'll see it when you take the drum off.
Oh, and I now have a pair of 46mm axle nuts in stock

Re: E Brake linked to front disc problem
I stand corrected. It was the rear. There is a weird sound dynamic that happens in that German steel. Problem, e brake cable had jumped off the e brake lever. How? My particular brakes do not have the pin and clip as the pendulum, it's a bolt. And after searching tonight, that is not correct. It had finally tightened on itself and that coupled with rust, lever got pulled forward with the pull of me setting the e brake and never returned but the cable did, thus popping the cable out of the lever. The cable was also routed improperly behind the lower tension spring. I also found that the adjusters were rusted frozen in their carriers. All is well after the corrections and I now have an e brake.
The carnage if removing the hub nut.
One snapped "industrial" 18" breaker bar with 8' of gas pipe, one bent cheap breaker, heat, PB Blaster and finally driving my riding lawn mower up a ramp, attached to the gas pipe, attached to the breaker bar, attached to the 46mm removal tool and slamming the hell out of it with a 5lb sledge, it came off. Between the weight of the lawn mower and 60 plus slams with the sledge, I am fairly certain that the last person to put it on was a heavy weight.
