My 66 beetle "Scooter" Empty My 66 beetle "Scooter"

Post by pwmcguire Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:11 pm

I picked this up last weekend. It's my first 60's beetle, the more I dig into it, the more I like it.

I have cleaned up the outside and started stripping out the interior. I think the body is in great shape, but I used to live in pennsylvania so this might be a typical southern body more video and pics to follow. Very Happy

You could name the Bug "Ray" and if you keep it the same color, you could take a ride in "Blue Ray"

Looks like a real solid foundation, and complete too!

Here it is with everthing but the headliner removed. This is the one from craigslist, after I posted it, I almost deleted it. Then I decided I wanted it. I left about 10:15 and got there about 11:30. His place is awesome. He has a lot of old stuff, a lot of it is very nice.

That will be down the road, Gotta get the brakes working and new window rubber. May be you can talk me into fixing the smoke issue and keeping it 6 volt or going 12 volt and putting a 1600 in it, I have a line on a potentially good rebulit engine that has been sitting for a while but I'm thinking I'll have to trade my 1300 engine for it. Brakes first, window rubber, engine, stop rust, interior and any thing that pops up, then body?, then extras. for me its a slow process., I'll keep posting videos on the progress.

I upgraded to a dual circuit because I gonna drive the hell out of this thing. I painted everthing in my way to slow down the rust. The rear brakes
are done as well, on to the axel boots

My 66 beetle "Scooter" Empty update on un named 66 beetle

Post by pwmcguire Sun May 13, 2012 5:40 pm

I pulled the original 1300 engine out and tore it down to a short block, the head studs look good. I'm going to install some low mileage 88 mm pistons and cylinders I have laying around. I need to pick up some rebuilt single port heads. I have converted it to a doghouse oil cooler. I found, what I hope is good og parts from BAP, a 67 carb and a german 009 distributor, when I opened it up, It had a shiny new spring on the side that should not have any spring, so I hope that is the fix. The engine came with a good working 64 distributor. I rebuilt the carb and saw that the float was pretty nasty, I had a pristine float from a whole carb that I had hung on to from along time ago ( I don't know why) and the float valve kind of stuck closed. I found some doghouse tin pieces. ( I had the shroud ). The best deal I got was on a scat degreed pulley (slightly used) for 5 dollars. The chrome nut was 5 dollars. I got a ton of gaskets from clyde. I have cleaned and rattle can painted all of the tin. I started to clean the intake and saw some welded boogers hanging on the preheat tubes and realized that they were holes in the preheat tube. Fortunately the beetle came with an extra, almost prefect intake (the preheat tube was pluged up with carbon) the heater boxes and muffler were rusted but very solid. One thing I have learned was to reuse German parts when possible. Here is some pictures

I turned the flywheel down at work today, with a friends help. Progress has slowed untill I sell the baja. On a positive note, someone has shown some interest in the baja.

Only my opinion, but I would NOT use those 88mm's in a 1300. For that matter, I wouldnt use them in a dual port. Old school slip in 88's are always a headache.

I'm going back and forth, I have them laying around from about 10 years ago. I might just get some stock 1600's

I have been cleaning up the 66, I polished the knobs, I have already cleaned the dash, it's dusty

I sanded and wire brushed the pans, put on a rust converter and painted them, I found that there were two holes, one on each side about the size of a quarter, but they are original. there is a lot surface rust I need to stop

Picked up some transmission mounts from Clyde and installed them this past weekend. I picked up a non working radio and stripped it out, I've got an idea I'm working on. I'll post the info and some pictures if it works out. All of the components are coming from Hong Kong via Ebay, hopefully they will be reliable.

Picked up a used 1600 dual port. I'm gonna pull the baja engine and replace it with the used one and drop the baja engine in the 66 and drop the price on the baja so I can sell it. So much for the 6 volt radio. I can easily convert it back to 12 volts

Do a search on Google for a voltage regulator circuit. I'm sure you can find one and get the components from Radio Shack to build it.

Or buy this one...
